Your colleagues become your family

Meet Emily - she tells us what she learnt from her time at camp.

Early mornings are the best

Summer Camp USA truly is the summer of a lifetime in so many ways. Elizabeth looks back on her Camp experience and about some of the things she learnt...

Working at a summer camp is one of the most rewarding things I’ve done. Summer camps aren’t only a great place to make friends, experience an American tradition, and try new things. They are a place of learning and self-growth. Here are some of the things that I learnt working at a summer camp…

You are more resilient than you think

Although working at camp is one of the most fun jobs you can have, it can also be incredibly challenging at times. There are times when you feel overwhelmed by everything, but those are times that you learn the most from. The hard days are the ones you feel most proud of, and show you how incredible the camp support network is.

Early mornings are the best

Coming from a former night owl, waking up early is now one of my favourite things to do. Early mornings become necessary at camp, as usually your day will start at 8am (at the latest). It might be a hard habit to get into at the start, but normally you are so tired by the end of day, that you will be out like a light as soon as your head hits your pillow. Habits at camp follow you home, and this is one you’ll be thankful for.

Your colleagues become your family

It’s amazing how close you will become with your fellow counsellors. Usually contact with home is limited while at camp, so the staff members become your camp family. You will be surprised by how quickly it happens, and after a of couple weeks it will be hard to remember life without them. Friends made at camp are friends for life, and provide you with great holiday destinations to visit them.

It’s true that time flies when you’re having fun

Before you know it, you’ll find yourself nearing the end of the summer. So enjoy every minute of it, and take some time out, to take everything in. Take five minutes out of your day to sit back and enjoy the lake, or the scenery, it’s the little memories that stick with you.

It’s the best job in the world

Everything you have heard is true… it truly is the best job. There’s no job in the world like it, so make the most of it while you’re there, and enjoy every minute of it!
