Working a ski season at Four Seasons Resort: Case Study

Meet Holly Charlton. Holly left the UK and set up home in Vancouver, working a ski season at the world-class Four Seasons Resort on our Work Canada Ultimate programme. She had (and continues to have) the time of her life out in Canada. Here's what she had to say about her experience!

First things first - why did you want to travel to good ol' Canada?

The stunning scenery is what attracted me to Canada in the first place - and it does not disappoint!

Why did you choose to work in Four Seasons? What made it jump out to you from the other resorts?

Because when I think of the most luxurious hotel brand in the world, I think of Four Seasons, and I wanted to be a part of that.

What was your job at Four Seasons? Describe your typical day.

I am a Front Desk Agent, which involves welcoming people to the resort, checking them in, and then checking them out at the end of their stay. As well as everything in between!

What activities, travelling and socialising did you get up to on your days off? Were there opportunities to use the facilities at the resort?

We are not allowed to use the facilities at the resort; however I use the local gym in the village. I also love to shop, hang out with friends, go to nice restaurants and bars, and go down in Vancouver whenever I can.

What's the accommodation like?

The staff accommodation is great, it's cheap, comfortable, and makes it really easy to meet new people and make friends.

What was the highlight of your Four Seasons experience?

My highlight so far is all the people I get to meet (colleagues and guests). There are people who work here and visit here from all over the world, and it's incredible to meet people from all different walks of life.

What were the customers like who came to the resort? Families, schools?

We have lots of families staying with us, as well as couples and groups of friends.

What skills have you learnt or developed at Four Seasons that you'll be able to use in the future career path or job?

The customer service skills you learn here are second to none, and I know I'll use the training I've had here and the skills I've learnt in all my future career moves.

How has your life changed since working at Four Seasons?

I've met so many people, live in the most beautiful place and have a fantastic job where no two days are the same.

Was the experience of working at Four Seasons everything you'd imagined? How was it different/similar to your expectations?

I expected it to be a high-pressure job, but I didn't realise quite how high the guests' expectations would be when staying at the Four Seasons.

The classic words of wisdom question, but it's important! What words of advice would you give to someone who was unsure about working in Canada?

I was so nervous about coming to Canada. I was nervous about not knowing anyone and not being able to afford it. But honestly, the best advice I could give anyone would be to stop thinking about it and just DO IT. Don't listen to the voices in your head telling you it's not going to work out. I am so glad I went for it, because I'm having the time of my life.

What did you go on to do after working at Four Seasons/what are you up to now?

I'm still currently working at Four Seasons, Whistler, and I love it!

Give us a classic travel quote that completely sums up your experience at Four Seasons.

"If you think travel is dangerous, try routine. It's lethal."
